R-454B

R454B Air Conditioner RefrigerantR-454B air conditioner refrigerant is a new generation refrigerant developed to replace R-410A refrigerant in air conditioning systems and new heat pumps. Its key properties are as follows:
  • Chemical Composition: R-454B is a blend of R-32 (difluoromethane) and R-1234yf (hydrofluoroolefin or HFO), with approximately 68.9% R-32 and 31.1% R-1234yf by weight.
  • Global Warming Potential (GWP): It has a low GWP (approximately 466), which is significantly reduced (by about 78%) compared to R-410A (GWP approximately 2088), making it more environmentally friendly.
  • Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP): It has an ODP of zero (0).
  • Performance: It has thermodynamic properties and pressure levels similar to R-410A and, in some cases, may provide higher cooling performance and coefficient of performance (COP)
  • Flammability: It is classified as A2L according to ASHRAE standards, meaning low toxicity (A) and slightly flammable (2L). It is a mildly flammable refrigerant with a low burning rate. Systems using R-454B must be designed with appropriate safety measures for A2L refrigerants, such as leak detection and ventilation systems.
  • Usage: Designed for use in new equipment specifically engineered for R-454B to replace R-410A in residential air conditioners, small commercial air conditioners, heat pumps, and chillers.
  • R-410A Replacement: R-454B cannot be used as a drop-in replacement for R-410A in existing systems. Although it has similar properties, R-454B is mildly flammable (A2L) and must only be used in systems designed to accommodate A2L characteristics along with the associated safety measures. Using R-410A in systems designed for R-454B is also not recommended, as thermodynamic and pressure differences may reduce efficiency and cause equipment damage.
